Math Week in P6/7

21st Oct 2019

Primary 6/7 had such a busy week with topic work, literacy and in particular maths! We had a daily math challenge which the children worked on throughout each day. Primary 6/7 also put their shape and timing skills to the test when making Gyrocopters of various sizes to test air resistance. As a class we learned about and practiced working out averages from our times and compared the results that each team recorded on their investigation tables. On Friday afternoon we had a Math Investigation afternoon and the class paired up and put not only their math skills but their problem solving techniques to the test. Finally, we went on a Math Scavenger Hunt around the village and found many different types of math right on our doorstep. Here are some examples; the surface area of the sand on the beach changes daily as the tide comes in and out, the volume of fuel at the petrol station doesn’t look like a lot but it is held underground and pumped into cars, in the medical centre appointments are recorded on databases and babies are weighed and their weight gain is tracked on line graphs, in the local businesses tills are used for the bulk of the addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing, time schedules are placed on business windows on which the panes are divided into fractions, the perimeter of the Muga is surrounded by a path and a fence, the lines in the middle of the road run parallel with the curb and lots of fences and gates have perpendicular lines. These are just a selection of the numeracy used and found on a daily basis all around us. We’ve had a great week and although Math Week is over we will continue to learn about and practice our skills every day!
