Maths Week Activities

16th Oct 2019

On Monday in data-handling we moved on from sorting on Carroll and Tree diagrams to using Venn diagrams.  We started off by exploring one in the school hall.  We made a large Venn diagram on the floor using skipping ropes (although the ropes didn’t really turn out like circles!) and then thought of ways to sort ourselves on the diagram.  We sorted for criteria including dinners and boys, girls and trainers, brown hair and trainers, etc.  Once the practical work was completed, we spoke about what the Venn diagram showed and focussed on the sizes of the groups and what the different groups meant.  On Wednesday, we made the most of the sunshine and worked in small groups outside using Venn diagrams made from hoops.  The 2D shapes were used to sort on the Venn diagrams, and we had a challenge - Mrs McGarry had to guess the criteria!  Venn diagrams are usually labelled but it was much more fun to test the teacher!  Afterwards, we interpreted the information the diagrams showed.  Take a look at the photos to see Maths Week in action!
